Buc-ee’s is well known in Texas as the biggest, baddest gas station/mega store in the Lone Star state, but the company is expanding.

In this article, we’re going to tell you everything you need to know about Buc-ee’s.

Why Is Buc-ee’s So Popular?

Buc-ee’s is carved a name for itself when it comes to great food and bigness. The stores are massive.

Buc-ee’s is famous for a variety of foods that have become must-try items for travelers stopping at their stores. Here’s a look at some of the most popular and iconic foods Buc-ee’s is known for:

1. Beaver Nuggets

  • One of Buc-ee’s most famous snacks, Beaver Nuggets are sweet, caramel-coated corn puffs that are crunchy and addictive. They’re a fan-favorite and a must-try for first-time visitors.

2. Fresh BBQ

  • Buc-ee’s offers a selection of freshly made barbecue sandwiches including options like brisket, pulled pork, sausage, and turkey. The brisket sandwiches, in particular, are a standout, with tender meat that is smoked in-house.

3. Jerky

  • Buc-ee’s has an entire wall dedicated to beef jerky in various flavors, ranging from traditional peppered to unique options like bohemian garlic and sweet and spicy. Their jerky is known for its freshness and wide variety.

4. Kolaches

  • These Texas-style pastries are filled with savory ingredients like sausage, cheese, and jalapeños. Buc-ee’s kolaches are popular for breakfast and are available in different sizes and flavors.

Buc-ee’s: A History

Buc-ee’s was founded in 1982 by Arch “Beaver” Aplin III and Don Wasek in Lake Jackson, Texas.

The idea behind Buc-ee’s was to create a gas station and convenience store that offered cleaner bathrooms, friendly service, and a wide variety of high-quality snacks, food, and drinks. Aplin’s nickname, “Beaver,” inspired the store’s now-famous beaver mascot and logo.

The original Buc-ee’s location was much smaller than the ones known today, with a more traditional setup, but Aplin and Wasek’s vision for Buc-ee’s was already in place: clean restrooms, well-lit and well-stocked stores, and friendly customer service.

Growth and Expansion

Over the next couple of decades, Buc-ee’s slowly expanded across Texas, maintaining its focus on customer service and cleanliness. It became a beloved stop for road-trippers, offering items like freshly made fudge, beef jerky, and homemade sandwiches, all while emphasizing clean, spacious restrooms.

In 2003, Buc-ee’s opened its first large-format store in Luling, Texas, significantly increasing the store’s size and amenities. This became the blueprint for the larger stores that would follow, each featuring dozens of gas pumps and enormous retail spaces with an almost endless variety of food, snacks, gifts, and apparel.

Buc-ee’s opened what would become its flagship store in New Braunfels, Texas, in 2012. At 68,000 square feet, it was the world’s largest convenience store, complete with 120 fuel pumps, a 255-foot-long car wash, and a vast array of products inside the store.

Expansion Beyond Texas

Buc-ee’s expanded beyond Texas in 2019, opening its first location outside the state in Alabama. This marked the beginning of the company’s efforts to bring its unique brand to other states in the southeastern U.S., including Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and beyond. The expansion has been met with great enthusiasm, with travelers eagerly anticipating new store openings.

Unique Offerings and Culture

Buc-ee’s is perhaps most famous for its immaculately clean restrooms, which have won numerous awards. The chain’s commitment to spotless facilities is a key part of its brand identity.

Buc-ee’s offers a wide variety of proprietary snacks, such as Beaver Nuggets (a sweet, caramel-coated corn snack), fresh BBQ, jerky, homemade fudge, kolaches, and a variety of Texas-themed merchandise, from T-shirts to home goods.

Buc-ee’s locations cater to regular motorists rather than truckers, and the stores prohibit large semi-trucks from fueling, keeping the parking areas focused on regular cars and RVs.

Growth Plans

As of 2024, Buc-ee’s continues to grow across the United States, with plans to expand into more states, including locations as far north as Kentucky and as far east as South Carolina.

  • Record-Breaking Stores: Buc-ee’s continues to open massive stores, including one in Sevierville, Tennessee, which surpassed the New Braunfels store to become the largest Buc-ee’s at over 74,000 square feet.

Conclusion

Buc-ee’s has evolved from a small Texas gas station to an iconic travel center known for its clean bathrooms, expansive stores, and unique food and merchandise offerings. Its commitment to high standards and a one-of-a-kind shopping experience has made it a favorite stop for road travelers across the southern United States, with continued expansion making it a national brand.
