The mint julep is a simple but complex masterpiece of a cocktail. Once you master the recipe, there are few drinks you’ll crave more.

A classic Mint Julep is a refreshing cocktail, traditionally associated with the Kentucky Derby. Here’s how to make one:

Let’s Make a Classic Mint Julep

Ingredients:

  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (or simple syrup)
  • 2 oz bourbon
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Muddle the mint and sugar: In a julep cup or glass, lightly muddle the mint leaves with sugar (or simple syrup) to release the mint’s aroma and flavor. Be gentle, as you don’t want to tear the leaves.
  2. Add bourbon and ice: Pour in the bourbon, and fill the cup halfway with crushed ice. Stir the mixture until the cup starts to frost on the outside.
  3. Top with more ice: Add more crushed ice to fill the cup and create a dome on top.
  4. Garnish and serve: Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and enjoy your Mint Julep!
